Living Green, Naturally: [email protected]
Our original intent has changed. Considering the trying times of pandemic et al, this house will be sold. Stay tuned for pictures. No casual walk throughs will be available because of virus concerns.
Current Plans:
MAYS LANDING, NEW JERSEY
[email protected]
Leach House, built circa 1880. This balloon frame stick style Victorian house moved from generation to generation for over 100 years. Mrs. Beach, wife of the owner of Beach auto dealership built in 1919, inherited Leach House from her sister, Mrs. Emma Leach. Much of Mays Landing has been handed down within a few town families and rented out, as was Leach House, until it was sold in 2002.
~~~LEACH HOUSE WILL SOON BE FOR SALE ~~~
Little has changed in Leach House. Rentals are rarely updated, and both I and the former occupants have cherished the old charm found from the wraparound porch to the original woodwork and hardware. Enter the vestibule and look to the right up the stairway and to the left at the door that leads to the front parlor. Straight ahead is the hallway and door to the kitchen. Enter the front parlor and move on through the archway that once held large French doors. The back parlor leads to the kitchen with its built in cupboard and a door that takes you to what was once the summer kitchen and, before that, an open porch. There is much that needs to be done in that area, but personally I’ve always envisioned a glass conservatory that would not only enhance the old Vic but allow a magnificent view of Lake Lenape and its unique, charming light house.
Currently there are three bedrooms on the second floor. The two in the back have wonderful lake views. A bathroom was added nearly 100 years ago. The clawfoot tub is here, installed at the same time as the radiators and plumbing. The original bathroom is now enriching the soil in the fertile, organic back yard. If you haven’t guessed, it was an outhouse. ;) The walk up attic, with door, enters two large plastered rooms. The view from the attic window in the back room is gorgeous, and the third floor is heated with electric baseboard. The boiler in the basement, for the radiators, is gas. Nothing can beat the comfort of radiant heat.
The plaster inside is horse hair, the exterior clapboard is white cedar. Most of the structure has been repaired and/or reinforced but a paint job is something the next owner can decide upon. I’ve been told by a master carpenter that white cedar isn’t particularly happy being painted, which explains the peeling that offends most of us. The handmade interior woodwork matches all the way into the attic and what little had been removed by someone else is stored. There are more than enough shutters to hang after paint has been decided upon. They sit in the half basement along with some of the original storm windows and screens, including some gingerbread. I have collected salvage, including a charming kitchen sink from the 1920's and older tall kitchen window pane upper cabinets, in order to restore the Old Vic, but it will not be mine to finish.
For many reasons beyond my control, my dreams of full restoration, with all of my beautiful visions and cherished vintage materials, cannot be achieved now. I will be turning my sights towards another charming home, closer to my family, next. Woods and a garden will be my focus there and teaching the grandkids, and any who wish to know, a way of life that should not be forgotten.
If you are truly interested in buying and restoring a beloved old home, please send me an email.
Thank you for your interest.
***It is important to note that this is not a move of desperation, but a desire to live closer to my family. Insulting offers will not be considered.
Accumulated treasures collected over the years are becoming ready for downsizing. My planned shop with glassware and china, decorative items for office use, and interesting home decor with vintage items has transformed into thoughts of repurposed garden items.
The common thread throughout Ina's Emporium is Peaceful times for body, mind, and soul.
Still my dream, Susanna's Farm is destined to become the culinary artist's and herbalist's mecca for plants and dried herbs in Southern New Jersey, possibly with a retail shop carrying handmade Green products produced locally. Herbalism classes are also planned. New opportunities abound now and the right venue should be chosen soon. Is the farm on the horizon? If so, I'm hoping it's going to be pre-Revolutionary War, and vastly interesting! Stay tuned as the move lines up.
